28 Feb 2014 Ten years ago, I went to a movie theater to watch Mel Gibson's The Passion curious to see if the charges of the film's anti-Semitism were true. Son of Man is a 2006 drama film directed by South African director Mark Dornford-May.It was the first South African motion picture to make its debut at the Sundance Film Festival.The film is an alternate retelling of Christ's crucifixion and resurrection set in modern-day South Africa.

It does have the notice about violence and disturbing content. This film is also 2 hours and 18 minutes in length. The IMBd has it as a 5.5 out of 10 rating as of the date of republishing this blog post in 2016. What a great way to start the Easter weekend with a movie about Jesus Christ. About Son Son of God is not the biblical epics of yesteryear. It is a toned down, much lower budgeted TV film that they ported onto the big screen with both added footage and removed footage. I have not yet seen the mini-series this came from but I look forward to checking it out.

The film retells the life of Jesus and is an adaptation of the ten-hour miniseries The Bible, which aired in March 2013 Son of God, by contrast, left me wondering if I would have had a clue why the Son of God bothered to get born into this world or why He died on the Cross if I had not already learned from the Bible that I am a sinner and been saved by repenting and trusting in the grace made available to me because Jesus carried my sin and guilt to the Cross (2 Corinthians 5:21).
